Will The Walking Dead survive until season 12?

Yahoo Contributor Network – Will The Walking Dead survive until season 12?
One of the producers behind ‘The Walking Dead’ claims the much loved zombie drama could go on for over 12 seasons. Currently filming season five, the show is seven years away from achieving that target but with rating always on the rise and an ongoing series of comics as source material, producer David Alpert may see his plans come into fruition.
‘The Walking Dead’ has a big ensemble cast that is constantly rotating as characters get killed off and more new ones join every season. A spin off is also in the works with a whole new bunch of characters to follow around the same post-apocalyptic world as the original series so there is plenty of scope for more ‘Walking Dead’ action. But how can the series keep going for 12 seasons?
David Alpert
Speaking at the ‘Produced By’ panel at the PGA, producer David Alpert explains that he loves having the comics to work from. Indiewire noted that Alpert said ‘I happen to love working from source material, specifically because we have a pretty good idea of what season 10 is gonna be. We know where season 11 and 12…we have benchmarks and milestones for those seasons if we’re lucky enough to get there.’ The way the show is currently going with more fans joining in every season, Alpert and the rest of the ‘Walking Dead’ producers may have to put their money where their mouths are id creator Robert Kirkman keeps writing more comics.
Source material
The comics have been running since 2003 and are now onto 128 issues so far. Though there are often major diversions from the source material, the showrunners are also keen to not alienate fans of the comics with too many major changes. To give an idea of where the show and comics meet, the Governor dies half way through season four of the show while this same event occurred in issue 48 of the comics. This means that there are plenty more issues to keep adapting and for the showrunners to use as inspiration well into double figure seasons.
Characters and stars
The big question is whether ‘The Walking Dead’ will be able to keep its stars committed to the show for such a long period of time. Some of the major characters are still alive in the comics and keeping some of these cast members for another seven years or more is going to take a very serious and long lasting commitment. Perhaps some characters can be written out if the cast members who play them choose to bow out and perhaps some could even be replaced by new actors but others are iconic and essential and will be mighty hard to replicate or write out of the series. Maybe all the walker action will keep them all on their toes enough to make the years of dedication fly by. I hope to see all my favorites still alive and kicking come season 12.
Do you want to see ‘The Walking Dead’ go on for 12 seasons or is that too much for any TV series?
